Kansas Day!

It is - again - January 29th.  All I can think of on this day is... it's Kansas day!

I'm not sure if schools in Kansas still celebrate by making "books" that include the Buffalo (state animal), the Meadowlark (state bird), the sunflower (state flower) and the state flag - just to name a few.  I know that I have at least two such books from when I was in elementary school.  There's also the cotton wood tree and the ornate box turtle and the honeybee.  In fact, I was in the Kansas Legislature as a child when the vote to make the box turtle the state reptile passed in 1986.

We also made all sorts of crafts.  Rings out of wire and seed beads.  Corn husk and/or yarn dolls.

I've never learned the history of other states (Texas, North Carolina) - I couldn't tell you when they were admitted (or suceded) into/from the Union.  I don't know their state songs.  It took me forever to even learn what the term "tar heel" means - or why it is significant to North Carolina (has to do with tree tar, for all the logging industry here).

I will always - however - have a fondness for Kansas Day.

Home, Home on the Range
Where the deer and the antelope play
where seldom is heard a discouraging word
and the skies are not cloudy all day.

Journey

Sometimes, life is about the journey!

Today, I'm going on a journey, for sure!  Two kids 3 and under.  Two flights.  One adult (yep, that's me- the crazy one!)

The destination won't be too shabby -  - we are, after all, going to meet one of my kids' cousins, and also going to my cousin's wedding.

But mostly... This trip is more about the JOURNEY!

(What this means for most readers, really, is that soon you'll get pictures of my uber cute kids in wedding clothes!)

Talk to kids...

I remember my mom once observing that I "talk" to kids.

Hmm.  She is definitely right about that.  I guess there are lots of adults who don't. Somehow, I've never known how not to talk to kids, though!

Now, I've got a little three year old who is a talker. I love it!

When I went to pick him up, his whole class came over and wanted to tell me about Pete the Cat, stomping in strawberries and blueberries.  It was really cute and sweet.

My favorite "talk" time, though, is bedtime.

Every night, it's the same thing, for the most part:  "What are we going to do tomorrow?"

So, we talk about going to preschool and work, about eating breakfast and dinner, or about packing our suitcase.  We talk about whether it's Friday - the ever important day at our house when the trash man comes- or whether it is a "stay at home with mommy and daddy" day, when preschool is closed.  Our conversation almost always ends something like this:

"Okay, Kiddo, what's your "last thing" for today?"
"What are we going to do tomorrow?"
"We're going to take over the world!"

Tea for 6

Five of my friends joined me for an afternoon tea.  It was lovely.  It was decadent.  I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and would easily do it again!

Rug

For our annivesary, we got a new rug!

It's amazing what a rug can do to a room.  And what it takes to clean the room for the rug to make it to the floor!

We're enjoying sitting on the floor in that room more, now.

And it's a good thing - since it is currently (mostly) a library/play room!

Do you like my one-sock model?

The Plan Is...

... that there is no plan.  Whew!

So I've thought - at least some - about my "plan" for the blog in the new year.  And the fact of the matter is... I don't have one.  And yet somehow, I'm okay with that.

Most days, I tend to be a planner extraordinaire.  I over-plan, and then re-plan.  It often stresses me out (many times to tears!) to not have a plan.

I guess it helps that the New Year has started in that unexpected sort of way.  In late December, I found out we have a wedding to attend in January.  Combine that with unexpected illnesses (in both kids), doctor visits and unexpected time off work...

I've also had a bit of a hiatus with my camera, although today I did manage to bring it to a Kid's 3rd birthday party.

So.. yeah.  I'm not sure if you can expect a post every day (I certainly don't have a goal of 350 by the end of the year- although, it could happen!)

I imagine I'll treat you to a few Wordless Wednesdays, here and there.  I do still like those, for sure.  And I have a wedding, a photography class, an afternoon tea, a painting class or two - and who knows what else the New Year might bring.

So if you like a little bit of the unexpected, and/or ramblings of a 35 (soon to be 36 year old) mother of two...  Stay tuned.  I'm sure there will be more to come!
