Six Words

Each year, one of my favorite things to do is to get a "page a day" calendar to keep at the office.  Then, each day, I get one tidbit of something.

I try to make sure it's a slightly different calendar each year.  I've had a year of origami, a year of tea, and a year of Fact vs Fiction - just to name a few!  I've never seen a sock one, and shoes are not the same!

Anyhow! This year, my calendar is Six-Word Memoirs.

It's Friday... and I went ahead and moved the calendar to Monday (like I sometimes do) so that I don't forget.  I'm glad I did!

For Monday, January 30th - the six-word memoir is:  "The child within won't go away."

Since I'm due in two weeks, the first meaning that came to mind was a very LITERAL translation.  The child that is "within" me now will be mine forever, somehow.  And by the time it is this close to the due date, it seems like she won't go away!  On her own schedule, of course!

Ordinarily, I'm sure I would have more appreciation for these six words from a "life" perspective- since I am a firm believer in following the child within - and try to keep a happy, child-like perspective on life.  Whether that means getting more excited than anyone reasonably should over a new pair of socks, or going out to take a walk in the rain just because (and get dirty on top of that!) - making a new recipe with Kiddo's help and getting muffin mix all over the kitchen, or sitting on the floor and playing trains for hours and hours - there are always opportunities to embrace the inner child.  I like to think that I take full advantage of as many as I possibly can. :)

Another year older...

Although I haven't posted about numbers recently, I think I need people to know that today, I'm 35 years old.  I feel like I've moved up a check-box.  You know, those surveys where somehow if you are 35 you are in a different "target" audience or something.

For some reason, the thought of this particular birthday was a little more daunting than my last front-number changer.  Yet somehow - it wasn't too shabby.

For lunch, we tried out the Flying Biscuit.  If nothing else, the name intrigued me.  It wound up being a hit. The boys love biscuits, I love my boys, and breakfast is awesome any time of day!  As an added bonus, it put us close to the downtown area- and walking distance from my favorite, quaint little tea shop.  I stopped in for some red raspberry and nettles (as recommended by the midwife a little more than a month ago), as well as more of a favorite or two!

It was also the "grand opening" of a mom and pop chocolate shop (hey, that rhymes!) located in an old depot.  Although it wasn't as "grand" as I expected - they only sell/produce 5 types of chocolate bars - it was fun, and I'm glad I went.  Kiddo spit out the dark peppercorn, but I took home peppermint and sea salt bars.  My chocolate collection has grown this pregnancy, since this little girl makes chocolate not taste quite the same.  I hope my taste buds are back in sync soon!

Only a few weeks to go, now.  Thank goodness.  And also the last (and only) time I'll be pregnant on my birthday (hopefully!) Any future kids, if they exist, will have to be born in Oct through December or so.  That, or I will officially be changing my birthday one year (DH's great suggestion).

Did I mention homemade Paella for dinner with creme brulee for dessert?  Yeah, I was a bit pampered today.

Actually... I should mention that I (finally!) got my own "Life is Good" shirt.  I've been giving these things out for several years now, but actually have few pieces in my own personal collection.  It started with a hat, then I learned that my friend is a professor where the founder graduated.  As a nice added touch, DH and Kiddo were both wearing their Life is Good apparel today - and I somehow failed to take a picture.  I did snap a picture of my new acquisition, however!

It manages to combine several of my favorite things:  The color purple, the Life is Good brand, a tree (love the outdoors!), and a bike - that I hope to actually be able to ride again one day!  Many of the items they carry also have an iconic dog (Jake), running shoes, and other sorts of things that make me happy.  I like to think I try to live by the slogan - even those days when that isn't quite so easy to do!

Overall, a successful birthday.  Over 50+ "comments" on facebook - including a very sentimental note from my brother.  It feels like a "virtual" birthday party!

In closing, a friend of mine - mother of two - said this to me a few years ago, and somehow it has stuck, and each birthday I am reminded of it.  Her quote:  "Some people think that after you have kids of your own, your birthday no longer matters.  I like to think it still does."

10 things...

I was nominated (tagged?) by Melizza - and as the recipient of the award I now have to disclose 10 things (most of) my readers don’t know about me. Yikes!  Most of my readers are close friends and family who know perhaps too much about me already.  So, I accept this as a challenge to my creativity!

1.  I have been avoiding the stairs at work... and at home.  I usually take them, but the last week or so I've been an elevator and a "honey, could you go upstairs and..." girl.  It's only one flight!
2. My favorite brand(s) of bottled water are Aquafina and Dasani.  I'm not sure why it makes a difference- and yet somehow, it does.
3.  My favorite type of yoga is Ashtanga.
4.  I stop by and look out the front windows downstairs every morning.  I'm not sure what I'm looking for, since the view is almost always the same.  Weather, maybe?  Animal life, maybe?
5.  Sometimes, I wear tinted contact lenses. I have both blue and green.
6.  I try to limit my starbucks intake to only once per week, ususally on Wednesdays.  It doesn't always work.
7.  I recently cleaned out my desk drawer at work, and managed to squeeze all of my "food" into 3 plastic containers, instead of having it loose.  One of those containers is dedicated to tea; another is dedicated to chocolate and candy!
8.  We have two big baby-items in boxes waiting to be assembled.  One day.
9. I love pajama pants.  My favorite pair is from my mom - purple.  VERY comfortable.
10.  I recently started reading a new book, titled Room.  I'm always looking for new book ideas - and while I don't promise I will read all suggestions, I'd love to know what you are reading!

This time, I'm not going to tag anyone.  But - if you are so inclined - feel free to join in and share your ten things!  After all, I love to read about them!

Amazing Women

I am fortunate to have in my life many amazing women.

In my ideal world, I would post a blog a day to pay tribute to each of them.  However, today I've decided to "narrow the field" to focus on a fairly specific group.  This particular group has recently provided me with inspiration and awe.  I feel fortunate to consider each of these women a personal friend.

Who are these women?  They happen to be artistic bloggers.  Artistic - because each has a passion for a craft.  Whether sewing, crocheting, knitting, quilting, stitching, photography, painting, or some combination thereof- these women inspire and delight me.  Some blog regularly, some only sporatically, and some have a following within their 'artistic' field.  I appreciate them not only for their talent, but perhaps more so for their ability to share/blog - in pictures and/or words.  As you will see, these women range from new friends (a very recent friend whom I've just begun getting to know) to old friends I have known for 15 years or more.

My electronic visits to the amazing women typically include:

JD:  A quilter, and one of my oldest friends - she even has "tutorials" for others in the quilting community!
AF:  A seamstress, a fellow parent of a two-year-old, who will be sharing her work with me tomorrow (and I'm very excited!)
KM:  A knitter, who blogs about awesome socks, dogs, and other fun things (like dyeing your own yarn) and is a former coworker
MR:  A jack-of-all-trades (chef, seamstress, traveler, photographer, and I'm likely forgetting something) who ran a marathon with me and is fun to follow from "across the pond"
JL: A photographer, an inspiration even though we've had only a small handful of conversations
MM:  A stitcher (and chef and designer), a fellow tea and Scrabble lover whom I've known since I was in high school, and whose work I've made a small attempt at completing for myself

Note:  Click on the bold words to visit their website!

As with any list, there is likely someone I'm forgetting that deserves a nod here - so my apologies in advance.

To these women - Thank You for doing what you do - and sharing with me (and others) - your friendship, your craftsmanship/creativity, and your words!

Love:  Seeing the creativity of others in action!
Hope:  These women continue doing what they do!
Do: Continue to blog as much as possible!
Number: Six - because that is the number of women I feature in today's post.
